CARD SECURITY

Essential information and advice from Creation about credit card security and keeping your cards secure.

Your card security

Because cards mean money, it’s important to keep them secure at all times. The good news is that there are quite a few things you can do to boost your credit card security, keeping your cards, your PIN and your receipts safe.

Using your card

Before using an ATM, always check it for signs of interference – they will often feature a picture of what the machine should look like. When you’re out and about, treat your cards like cash. Never let them out of your sight when paying in shops or restaurants – and don't leave them on show or ‘behind the bar’.

  • Always shield your PIN from view and be aware of others around you
  • Don't accept help from anyone you don't know when using an ATM
  • Only shop on reputable and trusted websites - look for the ‘padlock’ symbol in your browser
  • Always keep your receipts and dispose of them by shredding
  • Never lend your card to anyone else. Carry only the cards you need in case you have your wallet or purse stolen
  • Don't leave your card in unattended bags, jackets or cars - and never leave in full view.

Taking care of your PIN

Your four digit PIN is personal to you, so keep it safe. Never write it down or tell anyone what it is. To help you remember it, you can change it to something more memorable but make sure it's not something that other people could guess.

You’ll never be asked for your PIN when you buy something online. You’ll only ever be asked for the three digit security number on the signature panel on the back of your card.
